The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact OP directly using the following contact information. You may report suspicious calls or emails to the Federal Trade Commission.

Renewal of Limited and Provisional Permits

On September 21, 2020 the Governor signed Chapter 182 of the Laws of 2020 that permits the State Education Department (SED) to renew limited and provisional permits for an additional 12 months. Under the provisions of the new law, SED, at its discretion, may renew limited and provisional permits issued for Dentists, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Midwives, Licensed Master Social Workers, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Psychologists, Massage Therapists, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, Psychoanalysts, Respiratory Therapists, Respiratory Therapy Assistants, Clinical Laboratory Technologists, Cytotechnologists, Clinical Laboratory Technicians, Certified Histological Technicians, Licensed Behavior Analysts and Certified Behavior Analyst Assistants for an additional 12 months for good cause shown. The law takes effect immediately.
 

Applicants requesting a renewal of their:

  • limited permit should submit another Form 5, fee, and justification for the renewal to the mailing address at the end of the Form 5.
  • provisional permit should submit another Form 5N or 5PP, fee, and justification for the renewal to the mailing address at the end of the form.

For limited permits in Medicine, due to the COVID-19 related State of Emergency declared by the Governor, the Board of Regents have amended the regulation to allow the Department, in its discretion, to renew limited permits, for Physicians practicing under the authority of such a permit,  for an additional 24 months. For limited permits in Medical Physics, due to the COVID-19 related State of Emergency declared by the Governor, the Board of Regents have amended the regulation to allow the Department, in its discretion, to renew limited permits, for Medical Physicists practicing under the authority of such a permit, for additional two-year periods beyond the current limit of no more than six years total, for good cause shown, as determined by the Department.
