Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact OP directly using the following contact information. Continuing Education for Podiatry

Guidelines for Podiatrists

General Information

To qualify for re-registration, you must have completed 1.4 hours of continuing education coursework for each month of the preceding registration period in which you were registered to practice (50 hours in a normal three-year period). The coursework must be approved by the New York State Board for Podiatry. To qualify for re-registration, you must complete the requirements in Category A and B.

  • Category A

    At least two-thirds (35 hours) of your continuing education coursework must be in the areas of podiatric medicine and surgery.

  • Category B

    The remaining hours (15 hours) may be in the areas of health sciences or in areas dealing with podiatric practice issues such as ethics or risk management.

A maximum of 25 home study credits (Category A or B) will be accepted in any three-year registration period. Continuing education credits for participation in podiatric residency programs will be awarded at the discretion of the Board.

Approval of a Continuing Education Course

PLEASE NOTE: Sponsors who have had their course approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) do not need to submit an application. Courses approved by the CPME automatically qualify for approval in New York State.

Applications must be received at least 90 days prior to the date on which continuing education courses are scheduled to begin. The State Board for Podiatry will review and approve courses after they have been presented only in special circumstances.

Courses offered outside the state will only be approved if it can be demonstrated that the course is also offered within the state, so that it can be audited if necessary. Under no circumstances will a course be approved if it is offered on a cruise or other location that would prohibit audit by a State Board member or staff.

Credits for Faculty

Faculty members of a course approved by the Board for Podiatry will be given continuing education credits for the course they teach. The number of hours credited to such faculty members will be at the discretion of the Board.

Course Records

You should keep records of your continuing education for at least six years. The State Board conducts random audits of licensed podiatrists to confirm their compliance with the mandatory continuing education requirement. Unless you are selected for an audit, you do not need to submit records to the State Board for Podiatry.

Waiver of the Continuing Education Requirement

If you are unable to meet the continuing education requirement due to circumstances beyond your control, you may apply to the Board for a waiver of all or part of this requirement. The Board may, at its discretion, require the completion of additional hours of continuing education in the succeeding registration period.
